Hernando Beach - Hernando, FL Inshore Report on 4th Feb, 2026

The winter bite is going strong in Hernando Beach. Despite a recent cold front that brought cooler air and some breezy conditions, the local waters remain productive for those targeting species that thrive in the winter rhythm of the Nature Coast. Current Conditions Water temperatures are hovering in the mid-60s. We have experienced some "negative" low tides recently due to northwesterly winds, which has actually been a benefit for inshore anglers. These low water levels push fish out of the shallow grass flats and into deeper "potholes" and residential canals, making them much easier to locate. Top Targets This Week Speckled Trout: The "Gator" Trout are active! We are finding the larger specimens in 3 to 6 feet of water over mixed grass and sand bottoms. Slow-sinking mirrolures and live shrimp under a popping cork have been the go-to choices for consistent action. Redfish: The Redfish are schooling up around the oyster bars and mangrove shorelines near the Weeki Wachee River mouth. On sunny afternoons, look for them "tailing" in the shallows as they forage for crustaceans. Gold spoons and scented soft plastics are working well. Sheepshead & Black Drum: February is prime time for these structure-loving fish. We are seeing a lot of success around the local rock piles and dock pilings in Hernando Beach. Small pieces of fresh shrimp or fiddler crabs on a jig head are almost a guarantee for a tug on the line. Snook: With the season now open, we are targeting Snook in the deeper, warmer waters of the back canals and coastal rivers. They are a bit lethargic due to the temperature, so a very slow, deliberate presentation is required to entice a strike. Captain’s Advice With the water being exceptionally clear this time of year, "stealth" is the name of the game. Long casts and lighter leaders (20lb fluorocarbon) will help you hook into the more wary fish. As the day warms up, follow the tide back onto the flats to find fish that are moving up to feed in the sun-warmed mud.
